German Wechselpräpositionen Exercises

Wechselpräpositionen (two-way prepositions) are one of the trickiest parts of German grammar. The same preposition can take either the accusative or the dative — it depends on whether there's movement toward a destination or a static location.

The nine two-way prepositions are: in, auf, an, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen.

If you also want to practise prepositions that always take one case, check out our accusative prepositions exercises and genitive prepositions exercises.

Recap: The Key Rule

Wohin? (Where to?) → Movement/direction → Accusative: Ich gehe in die Küche.
Wo? (Where?) → Location/position → Dative: Ich bin in der Küche.

The End

Excellent work! Wechselpräpositionen are one of the hardest parts of German grammar, but the rule is ultimately simple:

  • Wohin? → Accusative (movement/direction)
  • Wo? → Dative (location/position)

The more you practise with real sentences, the more natural it becomes. Come back any time to review, and check out our other exercises for prepositions of place and accusative prepositions.
