Understanding TestDaF Levels (TDN)

TestDaF uses its own scoring system called TDN (TestDaF-Niveaustufe):

Most universities require TDN 4 in all four sections (total score of 16/20).

Some competitive programs (medicine, law) may require TDN 5.

Exam Format

Reading (Leseverstehen) - 60 minutes

  • Text 1: Short texts about university life (10 items, matching)
  • Text 2: Journalistic text on scientific topic (10 items, true/false/not given)
  • Text 3: Academic text from a specialist field (10 items, multiple choice)

Listening (Hörverstehen) - 40 minutes

  • Text 1: Dialogue in university context (8 items, notes completion)
  • Text 2: Interview or discussion (10 items, true/false)
  • Text 3: Lecture or presentation (7 items, short answers)

Writing (Schriftlicher Ausdruck) - 60 minutes

Write a structured essay on a given topic:

  • Describe and analyze statistical data (graph/chart provided)
  • Present arguments for and against
  • State and justify your own position
  • Approximately 400-500 words expected

Speaking (Mündlicher Ausdruck) - 35 minutes

Computer-based, not face-to-face:

  • Task 1: Ask about a university-related situation
  • Task 2: Describe a graph or diagram
  • Task 3: Express and justify an opinion
  • Task 4: Take a position in a discussion
  • Task 5: Hypothesize about alternatives
  • Task 6: Summarize and evaluate information
  • Task 7: Develop an argument systematically

Paper-Based vs Digital TestDaF

Since 2020, TestDaF offers two formats:

Paper-Based TestDaF

  • Traditional format with answer sheets
  • Fixed exam dates (6x per year)
  • Available at test centers worldwide

Digital TestDaF

  • Computer-based format
  • Adaptive testing in some sections
  • More flexible dates
  • Gradually expanding availability

Both formats are equally recognized by universities.
