What Does B1 Level Mean?

At B1 level, you can:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar topics
  • Deal with most situations while traveling in German-speaking areas
  • Write simple connected text on familiar topics
  • Describe experiences, events, dreams, and ambitions

Exam Format

Written Exam (105 minutes)

The written part consists of three sections taken together:

Reading (Lesen) - 45 minutes

  • Part 1: Reading correspondence (5 items)
  • Part 2: Reading media texts (5 items)
  • Part 3: Reading instructions (5 items)
  • Part 4: Reading for information (7 items)
  • Part 5: Reading for detailed understanding (3 items)

Listening (Hören) - 30 minutes

  • Part 1: Listening for key information (8 items)
  • Part 2: Listening for detailed understanding (10 items)
  • Part 3: Listening for main ideas (5 items)
  • Part 4: Listening to announcements (3 items)

Writing (Schreiben) - 30 minutes

  • Write a semi-formal letter or email (about 150 words)
  • Topics include: requests, complaints, applications, or responses

Oral Exam (15 minutes)

Done in pairs with another candidate:

  • Part 1: Getting to know each other (introduction)
  • Part 2: Exchange information about a topic using prompts
  • Part 3: Plan something together (e.g., organize an event)

Scoring

  • Total points: 270 (written: 195, oral: 75)
  • Pass mark: 60% overall
  • Important: You must pass both written AND oral parts separately
