B2 Level: What It Means
At B2 level, you can:
- Understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics

Exam Format (New Format since 2019)
Module 1: Reading (Lesen) - 65 minutes
- Part 1: Identify main points in a longer text (5 items)
- Part 2: Match information from multiple short texts (5 items)
- Part 3: Understand detailed arguments (5 items)
- Part 4: Understand author's opinion and attitude (5 items)
- Part 5: Close reading - fill gaps in a text (5 items)
Module 2: Listening (Hören) - 40 minutes
- Part 1: Understand interviews or discussions (10 items)
- Part 2: Understand a lecture or presentation (10 items)
- Part 3: Understand informal conversation (6 items)
- Part 4: Understand formal announcements (4 items)
Module 3: Writing (Schreiben) - 75 minutes
- Task 1: Write a forum post expressing your opinion (~150 words)
- Task 2: Write a formal message (letter/email) (~200 words)
Module 4: Speaking (Sprechen) - 15 minutes
Done in pairs:
- Part 1: Give a short presentation on a topic (~4 minutes per person)
- Part 2: Have a discussion with your partner about both presentations
Scoring System
- Each module: 100 points maximum
- Pass mark per module: 60 points (60%)
- You can take modules separately
This modular system is a key advantage - if you fail one module, retake only that one.
Goethe B2 for University
While Goethe B2 demonstrates strong German skills, most universities require:
- Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2, or
- TestDaF (TDN 4 in all sections), or
- DSH-2 or higher
However, Goethe B2 can be useful for:
- University preparation courses (Studienkolleg)
- Some Bachelor programs with lower requirements
- Demonstrating progress toward C1
