Separable verbs (trennbare Verben) are one of German's most distinctive features — and one of its most fun once you've got the hang of it. The verb has a prefix (auf, an, ab, aus, ein, mit, vor, zu…) that splits off in main clauses and jumps to the very end of the sentence: Ich stehe jeden Tag um sieben auf.
The exercises here focus on placing the prefix correctly in main clauses, in subordinate clauses (where the verb stays whole), and in the past participle (where ge- slips between the prefix and the stem).
Separable Verbs Exercise 1
Type the missing prefix at the end of each sentence. Even though the prefix sits far from the conjugated verb, it's the part that gives the verb its real meaning — aufstehen is very different from stehen.
